Conference on ‘Decolonization, Autonomous Knowledge and Sociology of Islam’ at the Department of Islamic Studies IUST

Awantipora, December 7: The Department of Islamic Studies at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) hosted an online conference on “Decolonization, autonomous knowledge and sociology of Islam”organized as part of its “Monthly Online Lecture Series”.

The conference was chaired by the Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal, who in his presidential remarks welcomed the expert and expressed appreciation for these regular intellectual exchanges at the University which help students and scholars to soak up new learning. He commended the department for carrying out such insightful programs.

Professor of Sociology at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Professor Syed Farid Al-Atas, who was the guest speaker, delivered a special lecture in which he deliberated on the topic by highlighting the concept of decolonization vis-à-vis “Eurocentrism” and deliberated on the subject-object dichotomy characterizing Eurocentrism as a “significant need for autonomous knowledge” and the relation to the larger paradigm of “sociology of Islam” .

Earlier, the head of the Department of Islamic Studies, Dr Afroz Ahmad Bisati, introduced the theme of the conference and delivered the welcoming speech.

The conference brought together scholars, faculty and students from the Department of Islamic Studies, with many attendees from other universities in India and abroad, and was followed by a short question-and-answer session.

A vote of thanks was moved by Dr Riyaz Ahmad Sheikh and the session was moderated by Dr GowharQuadirWani, both faculty members of the Department of Islamic Studies.
