Fear of circumcision prevents Hindu priest from converting to Islam

Bengaluru: A Hindu priest who announced his desire to convert to Islam has now changed his mind, fearing the practice of circumcision.

“I have diabetes. I was scared after knowing that ‘khatna’ (circumcision) would be performed at the time of conversion. I was afraid of the consequences and finally decided to stay in Hinduism,” explained HR Chandrashekariah.

“I was pained by the conflict of inheritance. My loved ones moved away from me. As I was an elderly person, it seemed to me that they would not conduct my last rites according to the traditions; and I decided to legally convert to Islam,” the priest told the media.

“I didn’t know anything about Islam. My house was located in the area where many Muslims lived and where many friends stayed. Therefore, I decided to change my religion,” he said.

“The Hindu religion Sanatan is supreme. I realized that my decision to convert to Islam was wrong. Ignorance is gone, there is no ‘mukthi’ if religion is changed,” Chandrashekaraish added.

He further stated that he was at peace after being welcomed into Hinduism by religious seers.

Chandrashekaraish claimed that since birth his thought process and way of life have been in tune with the Hindu religion and he felt disappointed with the hasty decision he made.

Meanwhile, some locals alleged that a JD(S) leader and others influenced him to make the decision to convert to the religion.

Chandrashekaraiah, 61, a temple priest, had earlier announced his decision to convert and also posted an announcement in this regard.

The priest even renamed his name to Mubarak Pasha. Photographs of Chandrashekaraiah wearing a skull cap and offering namaz have made it a common issue.

Former BJP minister Sogadu Shivanna rushed home and held long talks. Shivanna also organized a “ghar wapsi” (re-conversion) program for him through religious seers.
