UNHCR – UNHCR and Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development launch Islamic Global Refugee Fund Donate


New York – At a joint high-level event organized on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and Dr. Muhammad Al-Jasser , President of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), represented by Dr. Mansur Muhtar, Vice President for Operations and Dr. Hiba Ahmed, Managing Director of the Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development (ISDB) announced the launch of the Fund Islamic World for Refugees (GIFR).

The first Sharia-compliant funding tool, GIFR aims to provide innovative and sustainable financial resources to support development assistance and humanitarian assistance to displacement crises. GIFR was launched with an initial capital investment by ISFD and UNHCR, inviting various interested entities and individuals to donate to the fund.

ISFD Director General Dr. Hiba Ahmed said: “GIFR offers a unique opportunity to invest in meeting the development and humanitarian needs of millions of forcibly displaced people. She added, “We are proud to launch GIFR in partnership with UNHCR, which will pave the way for initiatives and efforts to assist forcibly displaced people and host communities in IDB member countries.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, praised the humanitarian partnership with the IDB and said, “More than 100 million people have fled for security reasons due to the devastating effects of war, conflict, persecution, discrimination and the climate emergency with growing needs for humanitarian assistance. and durable solutions. He added: “Innovative and sustainable financing is essential to ensure aid reaches those in need. GIFR is a new approach that will not only help refugees, but is also another tangible example of the strong solidarity that exists in the Islamic world with refugees.

Under the Global Islamic Refugee Fund, donor contributions will be invested and proceeds from investments will be used to respond to situations of forced displacement. Donors who contribute $10 million or more to the Fund will be able to join the GIFR Steering Committee and take part in fund allocation decisions in support of humanitarian efforts in IDB member countries, which produce and host the largest number of refugees and displaced persons in the world.
